STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION OF OFF-THE-ROAD TIRES

Tire stock is divided into new, used, and worn-out tires. This classification facilitates
subsequent use.

Example of Grouping
(1) New tires (Not mounted on rims)
(2) New/used tires (Mounted on rims)
(3) Demounted tires ...Unexamined tires
Examined tires (worn-out, to be repaired, to be recapped and spare)
(4) Spare tires (Mounted or not mounted on rims)
(re-usable, repaired, recapped)
(5) Scrapped tires.

Methods of Storage

(1) New Tires:
a. Indoor storage ... a cool, dark, dry place.
b. Outdoor storage ...ideally covered where possible
c. Tires should be stored vertically where possible.
d. Keep away from motors, power switch boxes and cables, fuels and lubricants.
e. Keep a fire extinguisher ready for use.

(2) Used Tires:
a. Storage methods are the same as those used for new tires.
b. Remove stones and nails from tires before storage.
c. Repair tires if necessary.
d. Attach a tag showing the tire's outer diameter for easy reference when the tire is
used again.

(3) Tires on Vehicles:
a. If possible, place the vehicle on jacks to keep the weight off the tires.
b. Cover tires where possible.
c. If the vehicle cannot be placed on jacks, move the vehicle once a month to prevent
permanent distortion of tires, and keep the inflation pressure as prescribed.
d. Do not paint tires.

(4) Tubes:
a. New tubes should be kept packaged and in a cool, dry place.
b. Used tubes should be deflated, cleaned and stored.
c. Arrange tubes in storage by size.

Methods of Transporting and handling Tires
(1) Transport tires as they are packed.
(2) Ideally a tire grab should be used for handling large tyres (29 inch and above) (Fig
22.2).
(3) When using a standard forklift, lift the tire from its outer circumference. Do not insert the
forks through the centre or inner of the tire (Fig 22.2). Ensure fork tynes are of sufficient
length and set wide enough apart to lift on the outer circumference (Fig 22.2)
(4) Ensure fork tynes are blunt at the ends and free of any sharp edges or slivers
(5) Lift and chock the front of the tyre before inserting the fork blade underneath. Water can
be poured on the tynes as a lubricant. Care must be taken with this task.
(6) When lifting tires with cranes use wide fibre sling or belts. Do not use ropes. (Fig. 22-1)




Handling of Rims
(1) Keep rims free from rust. If rusted, take off the rust with wire brushes.
(2) Handle rims carefully to avoid scratching the beads and distorting rim flanges.
(3) Do not place a lever or equivalent in the valve holes to lift rims.

Handling O-rings
(1) O-rings should be stored in a cool, dry place.
(2) Use a new O-ring whenever a tire is mounted on a rim.
